Friday
No Gus chapter today. I got Lasik eye surgery yesterday and I’m still adjusting. The words are just a little too glowy for me to want to work for long periods.
In other news–I’m getting a lot of questions of whether Gus will be turned into an ebook/physical book. The answer is yes to both. I’ve already commissioned the cover and will probably put out a call for beta readers in another week or so. No ETA on when that will go live. I have a little tweaking to the ending to do but otherwise I think it’s in good shape. I know some of you have put off reading until you can get the whole thing. Once it goes through my editor I’ll have a better idea of timeline.
Since Gus is wrapping up, I’m at a bit of a crossroad. It’s time to pick the next project. The problem is that I’m equally drawn to several projects at once. No idea which direction my muse will take me in.
Just for kicks–and because there is no Gus today–here is a tiny snippet of one of those projects.
Snippet from unnamed project
Light streamed through the hospital window. So cheery. So bright. It danced across the floor to flirt with the edge of the bed.
Mesmerized, the girl inched a hand toward the sun beam spilling across her covers. A soft smile of amazement wreathed her face as she rotated her hand back and forth, opening and closing her fist as she soaked in that feeling.
“It’s so warm,” she whispered.
Like a cozy hug, banishing the chill that had invaded her veins so thoroughly it was as if it had never been. All because of a splay of light that had wandered into her hospital room.
“Winters.”
Like a flower, the girl found herself tilting toward that light. A need driven by memories of the cold, dark place she’d been in not too long ago controlling her.
A hand slapped the bed next to her leg. “Cadet Roen Winters. Are you listening to me?”
The girl froze in the process of leaning forward, her gaze shifting to take in the stern faced individual in the military dress uniform.
Who was Roen?
It took a moment, but eventually it all came back to her in a rush. The important stuff anyway.
Roen was her. She was Roen.
At least that was the way it had been once upon a time.
Roen. For that was her name. Roen. Roen. Roen.
Roen Winters. The Winter dud. Black sheep of the esteemed Winter family. A family whose military achievements put them on the same rung as royalty. They were practically their own political faction.
Her grandfather was one of the highest decorated generals in the history of the empire. Her parents heroes who’d been posthumously awarded the medal of valor for the way they’d sacrificed themselves to protect xxx’s borders when Roen was a baby. Even her brothers were climbing the ranks quickly. The golden boys of the xxxxx.
Then there was Roen. The mistake. The untalented. The screwup. That’s who she’d been.
Before.
Now—she was something else.
Though she doubted this man in his perfectly pressed uniform realized that.
Happy Friday!

use the eyedrops. Gets worse when your eyes dry out.
Never had real eye allergy issues before lasik (probably because the glasses kept the allergens out) Drops for that too. -
Oh ok… and with that snippet, I am now invested. Well played, Ms. White, well played!

May the sunbeams hug your eyes and make them well sooner.
I followed that dancing light and am now trapped by your snippet, unable to escape without more. Effective hunting technique there Ms. White. -

Ooh, intriguing.
I had LASIK done 15 years ago. Best decision I ever made. I wish I’d done it 10 years earlier when a friend of mine had hers done.

Oh this is so interesting , I have so many questions ! Thank you for the snippet and best of luck with your recovery.

I remain very invested in the Tuann and would hope to see more of Kira. I’ve been enjoying Gus’ story. You are amazingly talented and I’m impressed you are getting as much done as you are with infant twins. Good luck.

Hello! This (probably) doesn’t really belong in this blog but I’m very interested in your Lasik eye surgery experience. Did you do one or both eyes simultaneously? Any issues or complications yet? FYI – I have quite serious cataracts in both eyes that have seriously and negatively impacted my vision – over the last 15 years I’ve gone from significantly better than average vision to significantly worse than average vision. I travel VERY frequently both domestically and internationally which has pretty much precluded me getting Lasik done up to now but I intend to finally get it done in 2027; I’m to the point that I can’t put it off any longer.

It’s worked out really well for me so far. I got both eyes done at the same time. The only side effect really is how dry they get but the drops they give you really help with that. The procedure itself was quick. Maybe 15-20 minutes and then I took a nap at home. By the time I woke up, I could see the clock across the room which I’d never been able to without my glasses. The procedure for cataracts is slightly different I’ve heard so not sure how it would be. Good luck and best wishes for clear vision.

Well, now I’m just a wee bit conflicted about what book I’d like next 🙂
-
Of course I hope for more Kira but the snippet of new work is so good! And… I especially love Gus, and look forward to the new chapters. Hope your eyes have “settled” and you’re overjoyed with the surgery. I was over the moon when my eyes were fixed.

I will absolutely be reading this book, if you continue the project!

ooooo I like this already!
